Travellers’ Tales of Bulgaria

by British visitors through the centuries

Nigel Middlemiss

ISBN 978-954-337-482-3

NIGEL MIDDLEMISS is a lifelong enthusiast for Bulgaria. The association began in 1972 when his wife, Prisca, and he were appointed to teach English at the Geo Milev English Language School in Rousse. They were impressed by the excellence of their students and the generosity and dedication of their colleagues. After returning to the UK in 1975, Nigel edited the magazine of the British- Bulgarian Society and joined Friends of Bulgaria. From 1989, he and Prisca raised funds in London for Bulgarian orphans in need, through concerts at Fulham Palace, St Dunstan’s Church in W3 and the Bulgarian Embassy. With a friend, Dr Bryan Skipp, Nigel collected from the Bodleian Library in Oxford, the London Library and the British Museum many eye-witness accounts by British travellers to Bulgaria over the centuries, which Nigel later edited and amplified to create this book.
